Nice and soft pattern. Razor sharpness. It tolerates backlight well. Neat and even blur.
Not the fastest autofocus. Possible manifestation of chromatic aberrations on open apertures.

The highlights of this 85mm prime lens are its 9-element, 9-group design and Nano Crystal Coat. It is designed for use in Nikon systems with Full Frame sensors. Autofocus is provided by an ultrasonic motor.

Video reviews

The 85mm portrait lens with a maximum f/1.8 aperture replaced the Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm f/1.8D focus lens in 2012. It can be used in tandem with any Nikon SLR body, from the amateur class (Nikon D3300, Nikon D5500, etc.) and ending with professional cameras (Nikon D750, Nikon D810, etc.).

Assembly

The lens is moderately large, but it will not outweigh the camera with its 350-gram weight. In addition, the size of its front lens (67 mm in diameter) will not allow you to go broke on the purchase of filters. The design of the lens uses plastic elements, soundly fitted to each other, which is why squeaks and backlashes are practically not encountered during operation. There was a place on the lens body for a convenient focus ring that rotates within 120 °, a window with a focus distance scale and an AF mode switch "M / A — M" (autofocus with manual sharpening and full manual focus).

Conformity

The main parameters of portrait shooting are high frame detail, soft drawing and spectacular bokeh. All these indicators are inherent in the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 85mm f / 1.8G : the lens provides razor-sharp images from the centre to the edges of the frame already at the widest apertures, while creating a neat and even background blur. But when shooting at open apertures, the boundaries of high-contrast transitions in the picture can be spoiled by chromatic aberrations, which the photo editor will help to suppress.

autofocus

The autofocus drive built into the lens catches the subject accurately and very reliably, but not too fast. In some cases (for example, in low light), autofocus tends to think when focus. However, in the portrait path, this nuance does not cause significant problems, because. often these types of filming are done thoughtfully and slowly.

Best Ratio

Among the five 85mm primes from Nikon, the lens has the best price-to-performance ratio. It will be appreciated both by owners of DX-cameras, which will receive 127.5 mm EGF as an output, and by owners of more serious SLR cameras of the Japanese brand.
