The zoom lens uses a scheme of 14 elements in 11 groups, which includes one element with extra-low dispersion, one aspherical element with extra-low dispersion, three conventional aspherical elements and Nano Crystal coated lenses to reduce flare and ghosting.

When focus, the Nikon 24-70mm f/4.0 S Nikkor Z relies on a stepper motor for fast and accurate focus on the subject. The diaphragm of the model consists of seven petals and has an electromagnetic silent control. Its maximum aperture of f/4 remains the same throughout the zoom range. The lens weighs about half a kilogram, and its dimensions are 78 mm in diameter and 89 mm in length. The thread diameter for mounting on the front lens of the filter is 72 mm.
