One of the few consumer SSDs with an 8 TB capacity, made in the classic 2.5-inch format with a SATA interface. The drive is part of the second-generation Samsung QVO lineup (2020), which is aimed at users who require a large storage capacity at a moderate cost—such as for multimedia libraries, backup solutions, or replacing HDDs in desktop PCs. The Samsung 870 QVO is built on the Samsung MKX controller and uses four-bit 3D QLC NAND memory. Speeds are at the ceiling of SATA 3 interface capabilities—sequential reads up to 560 MB/s and writes up to 530 MB/s. For improved performance in active writing tasks, it employs the Intelligent TurboWrite technology: with dynamic SLC caching, a buffer of up to 78 GB ensures steady performance even with large dat...a volumes. Built-in DRAM buffering of 8 GB helps maintain stable access speeds under multitasking loads—up to 98,000 IOPS for reading and 88,000 for writing. The stated endurance is 2880 TBW with a mean time to failure of 1.5 million hours. TRIM commands, encryption, and error correction are supported.

Intelligent TurboWrite technology allocates a portion of the drive's capacity to act as an SLC cache. For the basic version, the cache volume can reach 42 GB, for the rest — 78 GB.

How to choose the right SSDChoosing an SSD with the required speed and good reliability for home, work and gaming
Model overview based on user reviews
The Samsung 870 QVO SSD is a reliable choice for those seeking a balance between price and performance. Users appreciate its high reading speed and large storage capacity, making it suitable for general use. However, some reviews highlight concerns about the write speed dropping significantly after the buffer exceeds 80GB, which may not be ideal for users with high writing demands. While the SSD offers a high resource lifespan, there are mentions of the memory cells' wear rate being higher than expected. Overall, it's a decent option for those with a limited budget, but for better performance, especially in write-intensive tasks, considering the EVO model might be beneficial.

normal model, nothing special
17 December 2024
The Samsung brand is known for its quality. Usually. However, this is not the case with everything. This is one of those instances, as the wear rate of the memory cells is abnormally high compared to the memory of other manufacturers in my system.
The speed matches the stated specifications.
