The bandwidth of the optical interface is enough to work with multi-channel audio; and due to the fact that the signal is transmitted over the fiber in the form of flashes of light, such a connection is completely immune to electromagnetic interference. At the same time, the optical cable is quite fragile and requires careful handling.
