— an analogue of a stopwatch (see the relevant paragraph) used in pointer dials. The traditional design of the chronograph assumes the presence of three additional dials in the watch, as well as a stopwatch hand mounted on the main axis along with the hour and minute hands. The traditional second hand moves along one of the additional scales; the remaining two scales are used when the chronograph is on, one is responsible for counting minutes, the second for hours.
Note that nowadays you can find watches equipped with both a stopwatch and a chronograph: these are models with combined dials, and the first function is used when using the display, and the second when working with the hands.
