Oil viscosity additives
Viscosity modifiers
— additives designed to improve and stabilize the high temperature viscosity of engine oil. With the intense heat that accompanies engine operation, oil viscosity and overall lubrication efficiency will inevitably drop. Manufacturers take this into account and select the composition of oils in such a way as to compensate for this phenomenon. However, in some cases — for example, during prolonged operation at high loads — this is not enough, and the viscosity still falls below the permissible limit. Also, the general properties of the oil may deteriorate under certain operating conditions — for example, with frequent starts of a cold engine. And too low a viscosity, among other things, leads to excessive oil entering the cylinders and an increase in lubricant consumption for waste. To eliminate all these phenomena, special additives are produced; they may have a certain specific application, these points should be clarified separately.
