February 2018

One of the most successful SSD models available in 2018 based on 64-layer 3D TLC NAND flash memory and SATA 3 interface. c) and low latency when accessing a randomly selected block of data. It is positioned as a product of the middle price category, designed for use in PCs and laptops for solving household and professional tasks. Suitable for both assembling new systems and upgrading existing ones.

Made in a 2.5-inch form factor, has a standard thickness (7 mm) and can be installed in any full-sized laptops. Connects to the system using the SATA 3 interface, which is equipped with all motherboards from 2013-2019. The performant hardware basis of the Crucial MX500 CT500MX500SSD1 SSD is a 4-channel Silicon Motion SM2258 controller that supports high-speed SLC caching (up to 32 GB), progressive LDPC encoding, SMART, TRIM and NCQ technologies. The most positive impact on performance was also made by the DRAM cache, which consists of a 512 MB DDR3L-1866 chip. The manufacturer declares a guaranteed recording resource of 180 TB and gives a proprietary five-year warranty, which is valid within the resource, which allows you to record up to 98 GB of data daily.

How to choose the right SSDChoosing an SSD with the required speed and good reliability for home, work and gaming
Model overview based on user reviews
The Crucial MX500 SSD series is highly regarded for its excellent price-to-quality ratio and reliable performance. Users appreciate its good speed, 5-year warranty, and stable performance. Many find it a cost-effective alternative to more expensive models like the Samsung 860 EVO, especially when the price is lower. The SSD is praised for enhancing system responsiveness and is recommended for gaming and general use. However, some users have reported issues with packaging errors, receiving a 250GB model instead of the advertised 500GB. Despite this, the overall satisfaction with the product is high, with users recommending it for its speed and reliability.

I'm getting my second one now. Initially, I got a 250GB for my laptop to replace the HDD, and the laptop completely got a new life with the SSD. A couple of years later, I realized that wasn't enough space for me anymore, so I replaced it with a 512GB, and put the old one into my dad's computer. Both are working great and making the system really responsive.

1) with 500GB, the mean time to failure is only 180TB over 5 years. That is, about 100GB per day, which may be a lot for some, while not enough for others.
2) more than 5k for an SSD with 480GB

In-house memory is a plus

After the release of the unsuccessful MX300 model, in which Crucial acted according to the rules of rivals, abandoning the Marvell controllers, the company decided to start everything from scratch and instead of the MX400 model, they immediately released the MX500. This SSD is based on a 64-layer TLC 3D NAND memory of its own production, the Silicon Motion SM2258 controller is used to manage this goodness, which has learned better how to manage this type of memory and has acquired more efficient SLC caching algorithms compared to earlier Silicon Motion chips.

Almost twin brother SSD Crucial BX50

The data sheet of the MX500 is almost the same as that of its twin brother Crucial BX500, which we tested a year earlier. For both, the “straightforward” passport write and read speed exceeds a little over 500 MB / s, and the IOPS indicators just do not reach 100K. In synthetic tests, the MX500 showed almost the same 498 MB / s with linear writes and all 555 MB / s during file reading. And also, as expected, it dipped in speed when the cache was completely filled. Like most low-cost drives, active write operations of data arrays are not their forte.

People's favorite

At one time, Crucial presented the MX500 as a new people's favorite. 3 years after the release, we can say that their plan really worked. And even though the young, fast, and evil M.2 SSDs are coming from all sides, Crucial's old-fashioned SATA SSDs are not losing their positions in the market, and even by the end of 2021, they continue to be in the top 10 most popular SSDs on ek.ua. And this despite the fact that the first places in the sales ranking were staked out by numerous Samsung Evo models. With that said, we think the MX500 would be the perfect choice for a low-cost gaming PC.
