The Samsung 870 EVO solid-state drive is a reliable and fast data storage solution with a capacity of 500 GB, especially when compared to any hard drive. This device is considered an entry-level SSD, yet it boasts high-quality hardware components, including a high-speed MKX controller and its own 3D TLC V-NAND flash memory. The Samsung 870 EVO SSD MZ-77E500 500 GB is suitable for use in both office and home PCs, and thanks to its compact dimensions (100x70x7 mm), it can also be installed in laptops. The model is designed in the classic 2.5-inch form factor, which expands its usage range and even allows it to be used in fairly old systems. The throughput is limited by the SATA 3 interface, so the read speed does not exceed 560 MB/s, and the write speed is no more than 530 MB/s. Howev...er, this is still several times greater than traditional HDDs. Compared to the previous generation (860 EVO), the SSD has become even more reliable, as the guaranteed write volume has doubled to 300 TB. In addition, the mean time to failure is stated to be 1.5 million hours, with an official warranty lasting 5 years.

Many appreciate its durability and the fact that it maintains consistent performance even with large volumes. Users have noted the ease of installation and the availability of official software that enhances its functionality. The drive is praised for its low operating temperatures and five-year warranty, which add to its appeal. While some users mention the price as a downside, they generally agree that the performance justifies the cost. Good drive. Samsung 870 EVO 500. Since the start of use (2022), speed has decreased, but it still delivers up to 400 Mb/s for read/write. Also, the capacity at the time of removal from the system block was 4.6 TB. It will continue to serve as a portable hard drive. Remember that SSDs used to be manufactured on different capacities than they are now.
Speed, speed does not decrease with large volumes.

Reference SSD

The Evo series from Samsung includes quite expensive, high-quality, reliable and record-breaking fast SSDs, which subsequently set the fashion in the storage market. In general, almost like an iPhone. With the popularization of fast NVMe drives, Samsung has found itself in an interesting position where old-format SATA SSDs need to be brought up to their level and at the same time constantly looking at the price. With the 850 EVO the focus failed, the next 860 EVO was a return to the roots, well, the new 870 EVO can be called a step forward.

Built on Samsung's 128-layer TLC 3D V-NAND memory

The main improvement concerned the memory itself. If the first revisions of the 860 EVO used the classic 64-layer TLC memory, then its follower uses the brand new 128-layer TLC 3D V-NAND memory from Samsung. As expected, the controller has also changed - instead of the past MJX, the novelty is its modification MKX Metis, which we have already seen in the 870 QVO model. To speed up write operations in the drive, a combined SLC caching technology called Turbo Write is used, which, if necessary, adds gigabytes of dynamically allocated TLC memory to the fixed SLC cache.

Significantly improved unbuffered read speed

The predecessor Samsung 860 EVO will help us to test the Samsung 870 EVO in fact, which, according to the passport, provided the same speeds in the region of 530 – 560 MB / s. The first thing to note is the massively improved unbuffered random read speed, which smooths out the difference between SATA and M.2 SSDs. This in itself is a claim to success. But more importantly, we never managed to "load" the disk with work, causing it to slow down. All the time of the tests, the speed indicators practically did not change. Throw in an official five-year warranty, spice it up with a solid 300 TB failure time, and you get almost the best option for cases where, for one reason or another, it is impossible to use an NVMe SSD. Still, we are talking about a truly flagship product with the highest workmanship, which is rare for today's SATA SSDs.
