Protection board

— the presence of a protection board in the battery design (see “Type”).

In accordance with the name, this function is designed to protect the battery from failures and damage when operating in non-standard modes. In particular, the protection board usually “monitors” the charge level, preventing both excessively deep discharge and overcharging, and also limits the charge and discharge currents. Thus, operation is as simple and convenient as possible: the battery, in fact, monitors its condition itself.

Note that a protection board is not always needed: some devices have their own battery controllers.
