— the original Dolby Digital is a decoder for the classic six-channel 5.1 format. Dolby Digital Plus is an improved version that allows up to 14 audio channels, although it is most commonly used for 7.1 systems. Today, it is the second, “plus” version that is most often used: it is compatible with HDMI, allows multiple language tracks to be flashed into one stream, and at the same time works normally with devices for the original Dolby Digital.
