For more information about the technology itself, see "Bluetooth (all versions)". The main innovation introduced in the original v 4.0 was support for the "Bluetooth Low Energy" standard. This standard is perfect for constantly transmitting small amounts of data (for example, information about steps and heart rate from a fitness tracker): it consumes very little power and at the same time provides a communication range of up to 100 m. In turn, version 4.1 received improved protection against interference while working with mobile communications of the LTE standard, and version 4.2 — a slight increase in the speed and degree of data protection.

Of course, to use all the features of a particular version of Bluetooth, it must be supported not only by the gadget itself but also by the smartphone/tablet to which it is connected.
