The pedals provide additional control options, they can be tied to a wide variety of functions — from the classic piano "sustain", which gives a continuous sound even after the key is released, to turning on the vocoder or controlling other gadgets. In fact, even a single pedal is rarely needed; and two or more may be required mainly for rather specific tasks associated with complex professional techniques. Therefore, this feature is typical mainly for high-end synthesizers, in particular workstations (see "Type").
