The first type ("plug — plug") is used in cases where both the input and output are 3.5 mm jacks — for example, when connecting a smartphone to a TV line-in input (the latter often uses the mini-Jack standard). But the "plug — jack" option is used more as an extension cord — for example, if the headphone wire is too short to reach the audio jack on the PC case.
