Type C is a kind of USB connector, released relatively recently as a potential alternative to both full-size USB and micro USB. It has compact dimensions (only slightly larger than micro USB) and a reversible design — the plug can be inserted into the socket either way. It is also worth noting that the Thunderbolt v3 interface is physically based on the Type C connector; although it's advisable to confirm separately the compatibility of a Type C accessory with Thunderbolt.

It is worth noting that Type C sockets are comparatively rare in PCs and laptops and are less common than full-size USB ports. Therefore, for connecting a portable gadget with a USB-C socket, USB-A to USB-C cables are more commonly used (see the relevant section). This type of cable can be useful, for example, if you need to connect a gadget to a compact ultrabook where regular USB ports might be entirely absent.
