Smoky quartz

— the name of this stone means "smoky topaz", but it has nothing to do with topaz and is actually a variety of quartz. Other common names are smoky quartz or smoky crystal. Sometimes the name is shortened to "topaz", but this is extremely incorrect: real topaz is much heavier and more expensive.

Like ordinary quartz, rauchtopaz is a semi-precious stone. Its colour, in accordance with the name, is from light brown to almost black. Moreover, this material is often used for the main insert. Its price is relatively low, which allows the use of rauchtopazes in relatively inexpensive jewelry.
