Launched in early 2019, the 9th Gen processor is the lowest six-core member of the Coffee Lake Refresh line of cooler boxed (BOX) models. It is suitable for assembling configurations based on LGA1151v2 socket motherboards and is one of the optimal solutions for creating an entry-level gaming computer. According to its technical parameters, the Intel Core i5-9400F BOX processor can be considered a slightly overclocked (up to 2.9 GHz instead of 2.8 GHz) version of the previously released Core i5-8400 CPU.
Thanks to Turbo Boost 2.0 technology, under loads, the maximum overclocking of a single core can reach 4.1 GHz. An important feature of the processor is a hardware-disabled graphics core, which makes the need to purchase a discrete graphics card uncontested. The third level cache is 9 MB. A dual-channel RAM controller allows you to equip a PC with 128 GB of “RAM” with a frequency of up to 2666 MHz.

If you plan to play games, and are considering taking this processor as the main or temporary option (until you purchase an i7-9700K), it's better to get a 9th generation i3 and use the money saved for a more powerful graphics card than you would want to pair with an i5-9400F. If you want to stream, assign the stream to the graphics card by increasing the bitrate to a satisfactory quality. 2. It's better to have an i3-9100 with RTX 2060 (or GTX 1070) than an i5-9400F with GTX 1060. 1. Thermal power 65W, the included cooler is sufficient for stable operation (but not necessarily quiet). 2. No need to purchase an expensive motherboard (even an H310 chipset is sufficient) and fast RAM (2666MHz), therefore the build is cheaper (and less performance than) a reasonable overclocking setup for i5-9600K. 3. Still, in games, on average better than AMD Ryzen 5 2600 (but not significantly). 1. The low frequency in Turbo mode (4.1GHz) does not stand out positively compared to the cheaper AMD Ryzen 5 2600 (3.9GHz), which has the same number of cores but already offers 12 threads (for example, the price difference could be used to purchase faster RAM). It also falls short in frequency compared to the more expensive i5-9600K (4.1 GHz versus 4.6 GHz), which can be overclocked with a corresponding overclocking build of a PC. 2. The graphics core is disabled - if the video card fails, you will need a working video card to operate the computer. 3. There is no solder under the processor cover, only a thermal interface (otherwise known as "chewing gum", thermal paste), unlike the i5-9600K. 4.
