Relatively small and lightweight all-in-one lens for everyday use in conjunction with Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras. It is both a good wide aperture with a fast aperture of f/2.8 at the short end, and a versatile portrait lens, and offers a 7x zoom for travelers or photo hunters of shy animals. The model is equipped with a quiet RXD autofocus stepping motor with a special sensor that accurately determines the position of the lens.

In addition, the model's optical design of 18 elements in 14 groups includes a GM molded glass aspherical element, hybrid aspherical lenses, an XLD extra-low dispersion element, and LD ED lenses, effectively combating all kinds of distortion and aberrations. The aperture of the zoom lens is 7-bladed — everything is standard here. Of the compromises, it is necessary to single out perhaps the plastic case. However, thanks to him, the lens weighs only 576 g. The diameter of the thread for mounting on the front lens of the filter model is 67 mm.

Great glass. Very satisfied.

I took a long time to decide on it. The main advantage is the price and brightness combined with excellent versatile focal lengths. There are also drawbacks, for example, despite its quietness, the lens takes a while to focus. There's no stabilizer, and although I knew this from the start, over time you realize how much it's missing. The photo quality is not bad, and since the goal was to buy a universal, inexpensive, decent lens, it accomplishes this task at an 8 out of 10. What I don't like are the distortions. There aren't many, like the occasional soft focus. Chromatic aberrations are nearly absent, very rarely on distant subjects like branches, and even then, not always. Overall, it's functional at all focal lengths and can be rated as good. I rarely shoot video. The focus is smooth and quiet, which is a plus. The bokeh is weak, but that's not surprising. I really like how it performed at 2.8 brightness. The photos are bright, sharp, almost like with a prime lens. I am pleased with the weight and size. Even though the lens is entirely plastic, I can't say it's fragile. By the way, it performed very well against the sun. I've never used it in the rain, but there is moisture protection. The best detail is at focal lengths of 110-150 mm, with an aperture of 5.6 and 1-2 stops higher. It can take excellent portraits. Otherwise, it depends on luck and how you set up the camera.
The price is excellent for these parameters. Very little distortion. Silent and smooth autofocus. No issues with shooting against the light. All focal lengths are functional.
Don't like how long it takes to focus. It really lacks a stabilizer.

In Sony's full-frame fleet of optics for mirrorless cameras, there is a stabilized "station wagon" Sony FE 24-240mm f / 3.5-6.3 OSS. A worthy third-party alternative is the Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD. And that's why.

High aperture

Despite a slightly smaller focal length spread, Tamron's brainchild offers a higher aperture throughout the entire zoom range. For example, at wide-angle, the aperture can be opened to f/2.8, which blurs the background more. At maximum zoom, the lens is also "lighter" than Sony's counterpart — f / 5.6. But what it lacks is an optical stabilizer. However, the lion's share of Sony's full-frame mirrorless cameras is equipped with an on-board stub.

Special elements in the optical scheme

The model draws a sharp picture already from the open aperture. Sharpness steadily grows across the entire field of the frame up to f / 5.6-6.3. The optical design of the model incorporates two glass molded GM aspherical elements, two hybrid aspherical lenses, a duo of LD elements and one XLD element with extra-low dispersion. As a result, the pictures are completely free of chromatic aberrations. In addition, the surfaces of the inner lenses are covered with a multi-layer anti-reflective coating BBAR.

AF stepper motor

The lens relies on a built-in Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive (RXD) for focus, which is crisp and quiet. Switching to manual focus is done from the menu interface of the camera, since there is no separate button for changing focus modes on the lens body. And what is provided? Thread for a filter with a diameter of 67 mm near the front lens.

Compactness — above all!

Finally, it is necessary to mention the compact dimensions and low weight of the model relative to its peers : when folded, the dimensions of the lens correspond to the dimensions of a 0.33 L can, with the extended “trunk” — a 0.5 L can, and its weight is slightly more than half a kilogram. The model will fit both novice photographers, and advanced photo enthusiasts, and avid travelers as a universal all-in-one solution.
