New middle class

AMD Ryzen 5 1600 is the youngest twelve-thread processor based on the Zen architecture. It costs only $220, while its higher-frequency brother 1600X costs $250. The suffix "X" in the name of the chip means support for XFR technology, which automatically increases the frequency of the processor above the norm if the cooler can cope with the heat sink.

Compete on an equal footing

The competitor from the Intel camp is not so much the 12-thread Core i7-6800K for $440, but the 8-thread i7-7700K for $350. There are two reasons for this. First, the Intel Hyper-Threading technology for parallelizing one physical core into two threads is more thorough than the similar AMD SMT (Simultaneous Multithreading). Secondly, the Ryzen 5 1600, even manually, rarely overclocks above 4 GHz, while the i7-7700K easily takes the bar at 5 GHz.

For the thrifty

As a result, the AMD Ryzen 5 1600 is a great option for building a PC, so to speak, for growth. If you don't need twelve streams right now, it's likely that you'll need them in a year or two. Computers, on the other hand, usually do not upgrade for five years, or even more. If you don't want to bother with manual overclocking, pay $30 extra for the 1600X model.
