The EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens is designed for established creative photographers using DSLRs, this lens is designed specifically for EOS digital cameras with an APS-C sized image sensor and EF-S lens mount: for EOS 20D and EOS 350D. The focal length of the lens is equivalent to 96mm in 35mm format, and the true magnification ratio for macro photography is 1:1. This is very close to the EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM, Canon's most popular prime lens.
Canon's ring-type USM ultrasonic motor and new AF algorithm deliver fast, quiet autofocusing, with a minimum focus distance of just 0.2m and a wide range of optical performance for excellent image quality.
Mount EF-S
The APS-C sensor size of the EF-S mount cameras for which this lens is designed allows these cameras to multiply the focal length by a factor of 1.6, which creates obvious advantages in macro photography. The "S" in the EF-S designation stands for "short posterior working distance". In such a system, the image circle has a smaller radius, and the rear lens of the objective is located closer to the camera's image sensor than usual. The white mark on the lens mount distinguishes it from regular EF lenses, which retain the traditional red mark. The rear rubber ring prevents damage if you accidentally try to mount the lens on an incompatible camera.
High precision lens
The lens design consists of 12 elements in 8 groups and includes an internal 3-group focus system, which allows you to achieve crystal clear, high contrast and image detail right up to the edges of the frame. An internal 3-group focus system ensures that the length of the lens remains unchanged when the focus ring is turned. Therefore, the lens is perfect when shooting foreground objects at very close range, as well as when working with Canon lens-mounted macro flashes: the MT-24EX and MR 14EX twin and ring flashes.
High speed autofocus
The use of ultrasonic frequency oscillations in the ring-type USM motor provides record-breaking lens focus drive speeds. Canon's ring-type USM motor positions the lens with minimal error, instantly and without inertia, stopping at the correct focus position. To further improve the accuracy and speed of focus, the lens drive algorithm has been improved. At the same time, it is possible to perform manual focus at any time without the risk of damage to the motor.
Blurred background effect
The Electromagnetic Diaphragm (EMD) helps to create an interesting artistic background blur effect where the photographer minimizes the depth of field to emphasize the subject. This and the 60mm focal length make this lens perfect for portrait photography.
A godsend for digital photography
By refining the Super Spectra lens' multi-layer coating, Canon engineers have reduced flare and ghosting, which are common in digital cameras due to strong reflections from the surface of the image sensor. The coating, by absorbing light and reducing reflection from lens surfaces, contributes to a crystal-clear, undistorted digital image with natural colour balance.
Flash associated with distance
The lens transmits distance information to the camera, making it compatible with the E-TTL II flash metering system of the EOS 20D and EOS 350D. When used with Canon EX-series Speedlites, this allows to achieve significantly improved metering.
Additionally, a lens hood can be purchased for the lens. Using the EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM lens in combination with the Canon EF 12 II and EF 25 II Extension Tubes further reduces the focus distance and magnifies images beyond life size.
In harmony with nature
Canon's strict environmental policy dictates that only lead-free glass be used in our optics.
