About 12-15 years ago, when I was just starting to become an amateur photographer, any photographer who wants to have a really cool camera knew that he needed to choose from SLR cameras. But time passed, technologies improved and modern mirrorless models in the lower and middle segments rose in their capabilities to the level of high-quality DSLRs. I needed a serious camera, over which it was not necessary to shake, as is usually the case with reflex cameras, gentle from the point of view of mechanical influences.
Canon's 2016 flagship mirrorless camera. The camera has a relatively small size, a dense layout of controls and a metal light-alloy body. In a complete set, the weight is about 650 grams, which is a lot, but still noticeably less than that of SLR cameras of a similar level. The matrix it uses is new, 24-megapixel, with a crop factor of 1.6. But thanks to the development of technology and the improvement of the built-in image processing algorithms, the camera can shoot even at very high ISO values. I think that pictures taken at ISO 6400 have print quality, and if the image is intended for a website or social networks, then you can set 12800 and even 20000 units. Photos can be saved as RAW files with 14-bit color depth, which is very good for further editing in Adobe Lightroom. There is a flash and a convenient electronic viewfinder. The display is inclined and touch sensitive, with good sensitivity and advanced functionality. Has a good battery.
Autofocus sometimes misses when photographing dynamic scenes. The camera is small, but heavy. High-speed SDXC memory cards are required for normal continuous shooting.

Together with the EOS M5, Canon has finally managed to take its rightful place in the mirrorless squad, because the previous generations of this family, in a number of ways, did not reach the title of serious photography tools.

Developed ergonomics

A great many controls are dispersed around the perimeter of a well-built camera body: a drum for selecting shooting modes, a trinity of scroll disks (one of them can be used both to change ISO settings and to adjust white balance), as well as numerous programmable buttons. To top it off, on the back of the camera is a 3.2-inch touch screen that flips out to the selfie position. You can look at the shooting process not only on the screen — in the arsenal of the Canon EOS M5 there is a viewfinder with a resolution of 1024x768 pixels.

Family ties

The camera uses a 24MP image sensor found on the Canon EOS 77D and Canon EOS 80D mid-range DSLRs. With mirror counterparts, the model also has in common with the implemented Dual Pixel AF focus system, which provides quick focus in Live View and when shooting video. In the video recording mode (FullHD, 60 fps), the user has access to 5-axis electronic image stabilization, which works in tandem with an optical stub on board a small fleet of lenses for the Canon EF-M system.

Winning combination

The camera "shoots" a series of 25 frames in JPEG or 15 RAW images at up to 9 fps(with focus locked), which is quite enough for shooting dynamic scenes. Canon EOS M5 deserves special praise for being equipped with a full range of wireless data transmission modules (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and NFC). In the bottom line, the model combines high image quality (like the vaunted DSLRs) and compact body size, which makes it a suitable solution for every day for advanced amateur photographers.
