The junior processor in the 12th generation of Intel processors, released under the code name Alder Lake. Thanks to the use of four Performance-class cores, which support multithreading and automatic overclocking, this processor ensures an optimal balance between system performance, noise level, heat, and power consumption. The available cores operate at a frequency of 3.3 GHz in standard mode, and in case of computational power shortage, they automatically overclock to 4.3 GHz. The stock cooler is more than sufficient for their cooling, and the normal thermal design power is only 60W, which makes it a very attractive option for an entry-level work or gaming computer based on Intel chipset.
Core i3 Alder Lake is manufactured with a new 10-nm process and is designed for installation in motherboards with the Socket 1700 connector. Unlike its predecessors in the Core i3 series, the 12th generation chips have learned to work with both the familiar DDR4 RAM and the new DDR5 memory. The maximum clock frequency for DDR4 is 3200 MHz, and for DDR5, it is 4800 MHz. The maximum memory capacity is 128 GB.

Since these times mean delaying the purchase of a graphics card, I chose based on the existing 1660 Super. The card performs at 100% without much strain. I got it for gaming and non-professional photo editing. Motherboard Asus TUF gaming M plus (the similar one without plus does not support PCI 5.0). I chose the B660 chipset since I don't plan to overclock, and auto-overclocking is quite sufficient for my needs. The ID-COOLING SE-213 cooler handles it well, never exceeding 70 degrees in a stress test. In games, it averages 50 degrees. Price! Temperature. Performance. New socket with upgrade capability. The absence of energy-efficient cores is considered a plus until their software support is properly implemented. Few coolers under 1700. The available adapters can be considered as a temporary solution. |
The best low-cost option: prices, gaming performance, quality, energy efficiency, etc. Some compare the i3-12100 with the i3-10100, then I won’t say it’s worth it - the difference is huge in favor of the modern 1700 socket - M.2 speed for reading 7300 Mb / s and writing 3900 Mb/s (Kingston FURY Renegade SFYRS/500G ). Fast for 4 cores and 8 threads (best in class in my opinion), simple cooling is easy to handle, power savings, integrated graphics (for students, etc.), modern socket for further possible replacement of the processor (i5, i7, i9 12 -13 generations with corresponding motherboard). To nitpick, UHD730 graphics (UHD770 is better from i5-12500 on up). In general, the best option for your money. |
For its price, it is the most profitable 4-core, so it may lag behind the 6-core by 20 fps at high resolutions, BUT it is still very stable for its price. Cold percent, small price. Does not have |

Junior members of the Alder Lake family
The Core i3-12100F is the entry-level model in the 12th generation of Intel Core processors (Alder Lake architecture). It is manufactured on the basis of an optimized 10nm process technology, equipped with 4 physical cores (+4 virtual ones), which run at a frequency of 3.3 GHz, and when the load on the CPU increases, they can automatically increase the frequency to 4.3 GHz using Turbo Boost technology. In general, this is not at all the frail Core i3 that we saw literally 3 generations ago.
Multi-threaded processing and turbo boost up to 4.3 GHz
Thanks to the fact that Intel has stopped being greedy and slowing down progress, the new generations of Core i3 look modern and fully claim the role of entry-level gaming processors. The hero of our review, the Core i3-12100F, has a high IPC (number of instructions executed per clock), supports multi-threaded processing of information and can automatically overclock, and its performance in games, plus or minus, corresponds to the Core i7 models from three years ago.
Without built-in video core and cooler
As a rule, the bottleneck that limits the amount of FPS in games is usually the video card, so for entry-level gaming PCs it makes more sense to choose the Core i3-12100F rather than the more expensive Core i5-12400F, and invest the money saved in the video card. Moreover, at the end of 2022, prices began to slowly bounce back and for the sake of the conditional RTX 3070, you no longer need to sell your grandfathers moped. The only caveat is that this model with the F index does not have a built-in video core, so if you were looking for a similar option for an inexpensive working PC, then it’s better to take a regular Core i3-12100 with built-in UHD Graphics 730.
