Panasonic's mirrorless cameras have always been in high demand among videographers, and their video capabilities are comparable to few competitors. At the beginning of 2023, the brand presented its latest product in this field - the DC-S5 IIX model.
Full frame sensor and powerful processor
The camera relies on a combination of a 24.2-megapixel full-frame image sensor and an L² processor co-developed with Leica. The sensor is located on a movable stabilizing platform, providing compensation for camera movement in all five axes. This makes it possible to achieve image stability, reducing vibration by up to 6.5 shutter speed stops, especially in combination with optics that also have stabilization.
Hybrid autofocus system
Panasonic has long developed its own contrast AF system, but the DC-S5 IIX adds a phase detection AF system. The hybrid system includes 779 points and does a good job of tracking objects. It also successfully recognizes faces, animals and vehicles in the frame. In addition, the camera is equipped with an active cooling fan, which allows you to record 4K video for a long time even in extreme temperatures such as +40°C.
Shooting video
The strong point of the Panasonic DC-S5 IIX is, of course, its video capabilities. In Open Gate mode, the camera is capable of recording 6K video from the full height of the sensor in a 3:2 ratio, which opens up wide possibilities for post-processing and cropping. Full-width 4K video can be recorded at 30fps, and APS-C video at 60fps. Users also have access to 4:2:2 downsampling and 10-bit color depth, as well as features such as waveform display and vectorscopes. The IIX modification also has RAW output, support for recording to ProRes 422 and 422 HQ memory cards, USB-SSD output, and support for direct wired and wireless video transmission in 4K format at 60 frames per second. The camera is equipped with two SD UHS-II memory card slots. The Panasonic DC-S5 IIX offers more comprehensive video capabilities at a more affordable price than many other competitors.
