The top mirrorless camera from Panasonic's portfolio, armed with a 24MP full-frame image sensor. The sensor is fixed on a movable stabilizing platform, which provides compensation for displacements of the "carcass" of the camera along 5 axes. Its effectiveness is estimated by the ability to win up to 5 stops or exposure with unstabilized optics and up to 6.5 stops in Dual IS mode.

The Panasonic DC-S5 matrix works out the native ISO range from 100 to 51200 units. Mirrorless shoots photos at 7 fps, records 10-bit 4:2:2 video at 4K resolution at 60 fps with 1.5x crop and V-Log / V-Gammut profiles (or from the full width of the sensor, but already with a frame rate of 24/30 fps). Videographers will appreciate the presence on board the camera connectors for connecting a microphone and headphones.

To store the footage, there are two slots for UHS-II type SD cards. The model is equipped with an OLED viewfinder, a 3-inch touch screen with degrees of freedom in all axes, wireless adapters Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC. On one charge of the DMW-BLK22 battery, the camera is capable of shooting about 440 frames. As a whale lens for a camera, a universal zoom with a set of focal lengths of 20-60 mm and a “floating” f / 3.5-5.6 aperture is often offered.

Video reviews

The Panasonic DC-S5 joins the Japanese brand's still small ranks of full-frame mirrorless cameras in 2020. It is a good example of a well-balanced semi-professional camera that borrows a lot from Panasonic's flagship DC-S1 model.

Back-illuminated matrix

The camera has a 24 MP full-frame BSI sensor with a standard ISO range from 100 to 51200 ISO units with its older brother. Matrix stabilization system in the armament of the model works out up to 5 steps of shutter speed or exposure, coupled with unstabilized optics, and as much as 6.5 stops in Dual IS mode. In the Hi-Rez shooting mode, thanks to the micro-shifts of the sensor, the mirrorless camera can do multi-frame stitching with a final resolution of 96 MP.

Advanced equipment

The Panasonic DC-S5 is equipped with an all-axis swivel screen with convenient touch controls, an OLED viewfinder eye, and a complete wireless communications package (including an NFC chip). Its body is made on a magnesium chassis. But that's not the point. Much more interesting are advanced autofocus with the function of determining the main object in the frame, as well as advanced video recording capabilities. More about this.

advanced video shooting

The camera records videos in maximum 4K resolution. With a 1.5x crop, you can shoot 10-bit 4:2:0 video at 60 fps. From a full-width sensor, the mirrorless captures 4K at 10 bits, 4:2:2 subsampling, and 30 fps. V-Log / V-Gamut and HLG gamma curve profiles are supported. In addition, the operator has access to connectors for connecting a microphone and headphones. To store the material, it is proposed to resort to the services of two SD cards. However only one of the two slots supports the installation of fast drives such as UHS-II. In the medium class of full-frame cameras, the potential of the Panasonic DC-S5 is really huge.
