Continuing the glorious traditions of the company Minolta that has sunk into oblivion, the firstborn of Sony's line of telephoto cameras for mirrorless cameras was released in a snow-white body colour. Only large zoom and focus rings turned out black, and even then because of the rubberized pads for better grip of the fingers.

Developed ergonomics

Before moving on to the photographic abilities of the lens, it’s a sin not to single out its developed ergonomics in separate lines. A whole bunch of different controls are conveniently located on the metal case: autofocus and stabilization selectors, focus distance limiter, stabilization mode switch, as well as 3 more programmable keys(all buttons perform only one specified function). The maximum aperture of f / 4 is working for a telephoto in the entire range of focal lengths. Moreover, at the most open hole, a shallow depth of field is provided, effectively separating the subject from the background. The highlights in the blur zone are round, even if you cover up a little (up to f / 5.6).

Stabilization

Telephoto lenses put forward a number of requirements for maximum shutter speed when shooting handheld. Following the well-known rule (shutter speed should not be shorter than 1/focal length), you would have to set its value in the range from 1/80 to 1/200 s (the camera shutter does not work out 1/70 s). In fact, you can get a clear picture at much slower shutter speeds (1 / 15-1 / 20 s), which is greatly helped by an effective optical stabilization system. And if you install a lens on a camera with a matrix stabilizer (the second generation of the Sony Alpha A7 line), then the stubs will complement each other and a high-quality result can be obtained at values up to 1/8-1/10 s.

Detailing

Inside the body of the telephoto is also hidden fast autofocus, which focuses silently. Thanks to this, the lens is suitable not only for photography, but also for video shooting. In all cases, high detail of the frame is provided, including when shooting on a 42-megapixel camera Sony Alpha A7R II. An alternative to a telephoto lens is the even more progressive Sony FE 70-200mm f / 2.8 OSS lens, which not everyone can afford. But against its background, the cost of the Sony FE 70-200 f / 4 G OSS will definitely not seem unreasonably high.
