Video reviews

"Thumbelina" Sony RX100 literally pulled out of the peak of the compact camera market under the onslaught of a cavalry of well-removing mobile phones. Since then, Sony's line of premium ultra-compacts has been updated every year. In the summer of 2019, the seventh generation of the RX100 model was released in “free swimming”.

Thumbelina

The camera is called "inch" for good reason. Firstly, it is assembled in a compact body with dimensions of 102x58x43 mm, and secondly, the heart of the camera is an inch matrix with a resolution of 20 MP. The image sensor is built in the image of the strongest flagship mirrorless Sony A9. It is assisted in its work by a powerful Bionz X processor. As a result, the camera boasts lightning-fast response to user actions, record battery life (up to 90 fps with focus and exposure lock), as well as advanced video shooting capabilities.

Emphasis on video

In the seventh generation, the compact has finally thrown off the burden of a 5-minute limit on recording 4K video. From now on, the stabilized video sequence is written to the camera continuously or until the matrix overheats. Video shooting is possible in portrait orientation, in addition, a long-awaited microphone input was “brought up” by a specialist for video bloggers. In FullHD, clips are recorded on camera at frame rates up to 120 fps (or up to 960 fps on a short-term basis to freeze in motion).

I see the goal — I see no barriers

The optics for the ultra-compact was the “thoroughbred” station wagon Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T * 24-200mm f / 2.8-4.5, which the model inherited from its predecessor, the Sony RX100 VI. And from the innovations, the camera got a redesigned automatic focus system. Henceforth, 357 phase detection points were added to the 425 zones of contrast AF. In the software assets of autofocus, the ability to track an object in the frame by the eyes (Movie Eye AF) has appeared.

Advanced functionality

The most interesting way in the model is the "registration" of the viewfinder. It has a retractable design and leaves the housing on call. Instead, the "peephole" is invited to enjoy the benefits of a 3-inch tilting screen with touch controls. But there was no place for a hot shoe on the “carcass” of the camera. However, even without it, the Sony RX100 VII remains one of the most charged ultra-compacts, which is not a sin to recommend to advanced photo enthusiasts and professional photographers as a pocket camera for every day.
