The structure does not add up.
Sony WH-1000XM5 – the fifth generation of over-ear hybrid headphones with active noise cancellation, released in 2022. The model received a number of changes, mainly regarding its appearance. Instead of metal and leather, Sony decided to use plastic and abandoned the folding design, so the included case is quite large. However, the headband became more elegant, and overall, wearing the WH-1000XM5 is a pleasure.
Nothing rubs or presses, and the weight is almost unnoticeable. There is only one ergonomic complaint: the ear cushions get hot. After a couple of hours of use, you'll want to air your ears. Among other innovations are a total of 8 microphones (compared to 5 in the XM4) and a second processor for improved adaptive noise cancellation performance. The noise cancellation works perfectly, as you can't even hear the train noise in the subway.
The same goes for call quality, which is very decent. The 30-mm drivers' sound will appeal to many, as they support DSEE–Extreme and Hi-Res Audio (formats AAC and LDAC). Tracks sound natural, without bright accents. There's an equalizer adjustable through the app, but everything is generally fine without it. You can quickly mute the sound by placing your hand on the sensor on the right cup or just take off the headphones to activate the pause sensor. The Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones connect via Bluetooth 5.2, but fans of analog sound can still use them with a detachable mini-Jack cable. The battery life remains unchanged at 30 hours with ANC enabled and up to 40 hours with it off. A full charge takes 3.5 hours.
