— proprietary Synology technology for NAS. Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR) is a "smart" software RAID that optimizes space utilization with different disk sizes and automatically sets up parity. Unlike traditional RAID 1/5/6, where identical drives are preferred, SHR allows you to start with what you have and later add higher capacity disks, gradually increasing the array's volume without complex migrations. This is especially convenient for home and small office NAS where upgrades occur as needed: starting with a pair of smaller HDDs, then adding a pair of larger ones. Meanwhile, the user benefits from RAID protection—protection against the failure of one or two disks—without needing to deeply understand array configurations.
