Saws: types, purpose and selection tipsA brief overview of different types of saws and sawing machines with tips on choosing the right tools
Model overview based on user reviews
The Makita LS1040 miter saw is highly regarded for its reliable and precise factory tuning, making it ideal for carpentry tasks like door installations and trimming baseboards. Users appreciate its massive construction and high-quality disc, which ensures clean cuts without chipping. The saw includes a dust collection bag that effectively collects a significant portion of sawdust. However, it lacks features such as a laser sight, working area lighting, and a soft-start function, which some users find necessary. Despite these drawbacks, the saw is praised for its functional design and ease of use, especially for beginners. The LS1040F variant includes a light, which, while not essential, is a helpful addition. Users note that the saw's construction could be more rigid, and the motor could be quieter. Overall, the Makita LS1040 is considered a high-quality, cost-effective tool that pays for itself quickly, making it a worthwhile investment for serious work.

Great saw to start with! Take it even on credit - you won’t regret it, it’ll pay off!

This is one of the best and most affordable miter saws for carpentry. Ideal for door installations and trimming baseboards up to 12 cm high. (Though you have to trim from the side rather than from the top). You can improve the saw by installing a soft start module ordered in Moscow and also adding a shadow guide (there are video guides on YouTube). I bought it on credit and did not regret it one bit - it paid for itself in the first month and did not disappoint, it is very comfortable for me as a beginner to work with it (I got used to marking without a laser and shadow guide by slightly touching the disk at operating speed). It cannot handle large workpieces as it has no sliding feature, but because of this, there are no wobbles! All those Zubr and others sit on the sidelines! If you're getting it for work, keep in mind that this saw practically won't fit into any bag, you need a car.
Ideal precise factory tuning Reliable massive construction (with a convenient handle for transportation) Very high-quality disc included! Does not chip the edge! (I've been working with it for the second year without complaints) Convenient angle adjustment and a quality base without flatness errors! Includes a dust collection bag (collects about 60-70% of the sawdust) Pays for itself in 1-2 side jobs ;)
Absence of laser sighting
Absence of working area lighting
Absence of soft-start feature (be very careful with this, you need to get used to it)
Absence of plastic legs under the saw (you have to place it on a cloth, cardboard, or anything available)

The Japanese brand Makita has long and firmly staked out its place in the TOP manufacturers of construction power tools and does not seem to be planning to lose its position. The LS1040 miter saw is an example of high-quality professional, albeit not cheap, equipment.

Functional

The weight of the tool is acceptable to carry it to one person — 12.4 kg. Thanks to its rigid design and powerful 1650 W motor, the saw cuts wood, plastic, polycarbonate, aluminium profiles in longitudinal or cross section.

The possibility of tilting the working head to the left side allows you to cut vertically at an angle of up to 45º. Turning in the horizontal plane to the left / right, you can respectively change the angle of 45/52º.

The aluminium work table is equipped with a swivel ruler for easier marking and more accurate cutting. To work with long workpieces, extension cords are included. But there is no possibility to increase the width of the treated surface. There is no pull system. In view of this, the maximum cutting width is limited to 135 and 67 mm at 90 and 45º angles. Much better is the situation with the depth of cut, here it reaches 93 and 95 mm with a disc diameter of 260 mm.

Operator Protection

The electronic engine braking system provides effective saw stop, increasing operator safety, and the spindle lock makes changing the saw blade convenient. There is also protection against accidental start, blocking the power button.

Ergonomics

For a comfortable organization of the workflow, dust, chips and sawdust are removed into a dust bag or with a vacuum cleaner. And in low light conditions, an LED lamp with an adjustable neck will come in handy, but to have it in the kit, you need to buy an LS1040 with an F index.

Since the tool is designed for heavy loads, the manufacturer also took care of the convenient replacement of the motor brushes, its most rapidly wearing part. There is no need to carry the saw to the workshop, the brushes are simply removed from a special compartment and replaced with new ones.

For all the fun called Makita LS1040, you will have to pay a little, a lot, about €320, which looks expensive compared to less famous models, but with a pulling system. But if it is not necessary, the purchase of the LS1040 can be considered a capital investment that is guaranteed to bring its dividends.
