An updated version of the popular Beyerdynamic DT 990 model, which many musicians, sound engineers and music lovers called one of the best open-back studio headphones in the price range up to $500. According to representatives of the German brand, the updated model has retained the best features of its predecessor (note: sound, ergonomics and price), so they are perfect for both studio work and home use.

The quality of materials and assembly here is primordially German, in the best traditions of the DT series: velor ear cushions fit nicely on the ears, providing excellent ventilation, the foam filler has a memory effect, the metal headband turned out to be durable and at the same time comfortable, and all the durability plus or minus the design corresponds to The Beyerdynamic DT 900 Pro X is powered by Stellar 45 branded drivers with a ring neodymium magnet, a three-layer speaker diaphragm, a built-in damping layer and a lightweight coil.

The speaker impedance is 48 ohms, and the frequency spectrum has expanded from 5 to 40,000 Hz. For comparison, the original DT 990 reproduced a frequency band ranging from 5 to 35,000 Hz. The new speakers have retained continuity, so the headphones sound honest and natural, but at the same time not as boring and sterile as most monitor models. Thus, they will be equally useful when listening to music, watching TV shows, playing games, recording musical instruments, mixing, mastering and other audio work. For the convenience of the user, the headphones are equipped with a detachable 1.8-meter cable with a 3.5-6.3mm adapter, with which they can be easily connected to both studio and home equipment.

wonderful model, really honored
24 December 2024
I purchased these headphones about 2 years ago. I'm still in shock at how amazing they are, the sound is just unreal. I got them for work, but now I listen to everything with them. I used to travel everywhere with Bluetooth headphones from Razor, and it was very convenient for me. But after experiencing what these headphones are capable of, I didn’t mind having to carry wired headphones everywhere because the sound quality is 100% worth it! I was really impressed by the durability of these headphones; the fact that almost any part of the headphones can be replaced by yourself without any tools in just 2 minutes is really surprising. They even have a speaker on a quick-release connection! But despite their reparability, they simply don’t break. I had an incident where I stood up and pulled the PC with the headphones; I yanked it hard, moved the PC and the monitor, and ripped out the plug on the PC, but NOTHING happened to the headphones! With regular headphones, I think the ear would have come off under such strain.

There's only one downside: the leather pad on the headband doesn’t last long. Throughout the entire time of use, I've replaced it twice. Although replacing it is very easy (takes less than a minute), I couldn't find this headband for sale in Ukraine, so I have to order it from China.
Very high quality sound, very reliable
The leather headband cover is not very high quality and has to be replaced quite often.

Popular questions

Can you listen to Beyerdynamic DT 900 Pro X around other people?

Not the best option if it’s important not to disturb anyone: sound passes through the open earcups in both directions, so people nearby may hear the music, while outside noise may distract you. Closed-back headphones are more practical for shared spaces.Source:SpecificationsExpert reviews

Is a separate amplifier required?

The Beyerdynamic DT 900 Pro X usually work well with a laptop, phone, or audio interface without a separate amplifier: their impedance is 48 ohms and sensitivity is 114 dB. An amplifier may be useful for additional volume headroom or due to the characteristics of a particular source, but it is not required.Source:SpecificationsExpert reviews

What tasks are the Beyerdynamic DT 900 Pro X genuinely well suited for?

They are best suited for mixing, audio work, and attentive home listening: the sound is detailed, with good instrument separation and bass control. The open-back design helps assess the recording’s soundstage but requires a quiet room.Source:SpecificationsExpert reviews

How comfortable are they for extended use?

Beyerdynamic DT 900 Pro X are designed for extended sessions: velour ear pads, open-back ear cups, and evenly distributed 345 g weight reduce the sensation of overheating and pressure. They are less convenient for travel: the ear cups do not fold and are not designed for compact carrying.Source:SpecificationsExpert reviews

What to choose for recording outside the studio: an open-back or closed-back version?

The Beyerdynamic DT 900 Pro X is best suited for a quiet room, mixing, and analyzing the recording’s spatial image. For working on the go, in a noisy environment, or recording near other people, the closed-back DT 700 PRO X is more practical: it lets in less external noise and leaks less sound.Source:SpecificationsExpert reviews

What will the sound signature be like?

The Beyerdynamic DT 900 Pro X deliver a tight, analytical sound with an even midrange, controlled bass, and notable clarity in the upper midrange and treble. Listeners who prefer powerful bass may find the presentation restrained, while those sensitive to bright treble may need to use EQ.Source:SpecificationsExpert reviews

Is it worth paying extra for the Beyerdynamic DT 900 Pro X instead of the DT 990 PRO?

The extra cost is justified if detachable cables, replaceable parts, a more comfortable fit, and operation from standard sources without requiring an amplifier are important. If you need a more affordable open-back option for stationary use, the older model remains a sensible alternative.Source:SpecificationsExpert reviews
