High resistance 250 Ohm. Velor ear pads. Metal carcass.

PRO-version of the legendary open-back headphones, which to this day are actively used in recording studios across the globe. They are manufactured in Germany, boasting impeccable build quality and serve flawlessly for decades. The design allows for easy assembly and disassembly of moving parts; the frame is made of metal, the velour earpads can be removed and washed, and the ear cups can be easily detached from the headband using special locks.

This attention to detail has significantly extended the lifespan of the headphones, so they rarely need repairs at a service center. The sound of the Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO is in its own way unique. On one hand, they provide a fairly flat frequency response with an excellent sound balance and minimal nonlinear distortion, which can be useful for recording, mixing, mastering, audio restoration, and any other sound work.

On the other hand, the headphones sound not dull and neutral like many other studio models, but rather bright and hi-fi, which is why they are appreciated by music lovers and audiophiles. Regarding technical specifications, it's worth noting that the headphone sensitivity reaches 96 dB, and the claimed frequency range spans from 5 to 35,000 Hz. The device comes with a non-detachable 3-meter coiled cable with a 3.5-6.3mm adapter, making it easy to connect to any synthesizer, drum machine, mixer, sound card, smartphone, or laptop. However, due to their high impedance (250 Ohms), a powerful signal source with a quality preamplifier is needed for full performance.

Model overview based on user reviews
The Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro headphones are highly regarded for their exceptional sound quality and comfort. Users praise the headphones for their amazing detailing and deep bass, making them ideal for both music listening and professional studio work. The velour ear cushions are noted for their comfort during extended use, and the headphones' build quality is described as robust and reliable. However, some users mention a sharp peak in the high frequencies, which can be adjusted with an equalizer. The headphones have a high impedance of 250 Ohms, requiring a powerful amplifier for optimal performance. Despite some minor drawbacks, such as the inconvenient coiled cable and the need for proper amplification, the DT 990 Pro is considered a top choice in its price range, offering a clear and spacious soundstage that is well-suited for various music genres.

You can get almost perfect headphones for little money.

Good headphones, but they do not have a very smooth frequency response. Compared to other headphones, which also have an impedance of 250 ohms, they are quite loud.
Very deep bass. All frequencies from the very bottom to the very top are actually reproduced. Wonderful three-dimensional construction of the stage.
Sharp peak at approximately 10 kHz. On some recordings this may not be noticeable, but on others the tutting is very annoying. The lowest bass is just a little bit missing. Treated with an equalizer. My settings are as follows: frequency 10 kHz -2.5 dB filter with a quality factor of 0.707. Frequencies from 60Hz to 20Hz +0.5 dB. If the equalizer is good (for example, in Foobar or Neutron), then this allows you to get a truly ideal sound. Unfortunately, in most cases, turning on the equalizer only kills the sound.

great model, love it

I professionally write electronic music. Those who are in the know understand that the most challenging aspect is ensuring quality monitoring, which is quite difficult in a home environment. No matter how expensive the monitors are, if the room's walls are not equipped with sound-absorbing material (which is several times more expensive than the monitors themselves and not always technically feasible), they won't be very effective. I often had to spend a lot of extra time reworking my tracks because the frequency balance wasn't even enough. Moreover, I'm a very active person by nature, and being tied to a single place or studio weighed on me. So, I decided to ignore authoritative gurus' claims that "mixing in headphones is not possible" and conducted my own research on the matter. The result was the purchase of this model.
Very comfortable, lightweight, and the velour pleasantly envelops the head around the ears. Thus, no pressure is applied on the ear canals themselves. This is important for both the authenticity of sound perception and preventing fatigue during long hours of use.
Now about the sound. The detailing is amazing. Yes, the bass is enhanced (as many say "bloated") BUT! It doesn’t sound like a continuous mush. The bass is very detailed. Figuratively speaking, it’s like having a sound magnifying glass, and all the small details are large enough to notice. This level of detailing extends across the full range, though the boost in the highs is not as noticeable.
Regarding sound isolation. It is indeed present and much better than in the 880 model or the Sennheiser HD 650. External sounds are somewhat muffled, and those around you realistically do not hear much, and of course, only the high frequencies. It may be disruptive for sleeping in the same room, but in other situations, it's not a problem.
Additionally, a resistance of 250 Ohms theoretically should rule out their use on consumer devices, but my Samsung Note 5 powers them quite confidently.
Overall, I am completely satisfied.
If you're using them just for listening to music, then everything's fine. Electronic music, in particular, will sound awesome. If you're using them for music production and mixing, keep in mind that on consumer equipment your tracks might sound somewhat less vibrant than what you hear in the headphones. You'll gradually get used to this difference and everything will be OK. Working with them is very comfortable.

They are definitely worth the money.

Definitely, for this price, it's the best choice. (I'm talking about the pro model)
Competitors look somewhat sluggish and pale in comparison to these headphones.
Excellent sound. The bass is just fantastic. Fit perfectly on the head, ears don't get tired, don't sweat. No discomfort.
the coiled cable is very inconvenient. There is a certain lift felt in the upper mid-range, which is not very good for studio work.

Popular questions

Do you need a separate amplifier for the Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro?

Yes, for full-bodied sound, an amplifier or external sound card is essential. The 250-ohm impedance and 96 dB sensitivity require ample power headroom: from a regular smartphone or a basic computer output, the headphones will play quietly, and the bass will lose its fullness and dynamics.Source:SpecificationsGeneral informationUser Reviews

What is their sound signature like?

The sound is detailed and energetic, with an emphasis on tight, deep bass and pronounced highs. Due to the bright treble, low-quality or overly compressed recordings may cause listening fatigue through harsh sibilance, so fans of a neutral sound may sometimes need to make slight EQ adjustments.Source:General informationUser Reviews

Can the ear pads be removed and washed?

Yes, the velour ear pads and soft snap-on headband cushion are easy to remove for cleaning or washing. The textile cushions do not make your ears sweat during prolonged use, and they can be replaced with new ones when they naturally wear out over time.Source:General informationUser Reviews

Are they suitable for gaming and watching movies?

Yes, thanks to the open-back design and wide soundstage, sound positioning in games and movies is excellent. You will clearly hear footsteps, rustling, and subtle environmental details, but you will need a sound card with ample power to achieve sufficient volume.Source:User Reviews

Are the Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro comfortable to wear for hours?

The fit is soft and unobtrusive: the velour Over-Ear earcups fully surround the ears and don’t chafe, despite the total weight of 250 grams. The metal headband holds firmly, but if desired, the steel plate can be gently bent outward by hand to reduce the clamping force.Source:SpecificationsGeneral informationUser Reviews

Can people around you hear music from the Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro headphones?

Yes, sound leaks out freely because the earcups have a fully open-back design. For the same reason, the model barely blocks external noise and is not suitable for the office, outdoors, or travel—it is intended for a quiet home or studio workspace.Source:SpecificationsUser Reviews

Which cable is included, and is it detachable?

Non-detachable coiled cable, extending up to 3 meters, with a 3.5 mm plug. Due to its spiral shape, the cable is somewhat heavy, but it does not tangle underfoot; a reliable screw-on 6.35 mm adapter is included for connecting to audio interfaces.Source:SpecificationsGeneral information

Professional model DT 990 PRO from Beyerdynamic are highly reliable and comfortable open-type headphones for listening to music on Hi-End equipment.

German Precision

Everything in the model is aimed at maximum ergonomics. Round velor ear cushions do not tyre your ears even after prolonged use. They are not hot, and they can also be washed in a typewriter, according to the manufacturer. The frame of the headband is made of a metal plate, if desired, it can be slightly bent to give the structure a more comfortable shape. The cups do not rotate in a horizontal plane, and do not fold, but the headband is twisted, so using the headphones is more or less convenient. The soft leatherette overlay on the headband is made with rivets. It can be easily removed and also washed if desired. As for the assembly, there are no complaints, because it is German, and they know a lot about good things.

A twisted non-removable cable comes out of the left bowl, has a length of 3 m in a stretched state and for some reason ends with a 3.5 mm mini-Jack plug. Due to the fact that the headphones are high-impedance (250 ohms), for comfortable playback, they require connection to a powerful amplifier. Fortunately, there is a 6.3 mm Jack threaded adapter in the kit that allows you to do this.

juicy sound

As for the sound, here, as usual, everything is relative. But, in general, the overall impression is positive. The soundstage is very voluminous, each instrument is in its place and has enough space for disclosure. Low frequencies are moderate, but solid and detailed. The middle is not clamped and not failed. But the high ones are too bright, up to the pain. It is not surprising, the frequency range in the model is up to 35,000 Hz. Theoretically, a powerful amplifier could solve the problem of high-frequency bursts, but we did not find this at hand.

The Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO is a solid choice for 200 USD for a solid music pro and just a connoisseur of good sound, who has not forgotten to emphasize the big name of the manufacturer.
