A Role Model

Technically, the camera is largely based on the popular Nikon Z6 III. The mirrorless model features a partially stacked 24.5 MP full-frame sensor, an intelligent autofocus system, and in-body image stabilization with claimed effectiveness of up to 7.5 shutter speed or exposure stops. At the same time, there is no mechanical shutter in the design — shooting is performed exclusively using an electronic shutter.

Following RED Principles

The camera supports the R3D (NE) codec designed for recording RAW video. It uses the same Log curves and is compatible with the same LUTs used with professional RED cameras. The model can also record video in N-Raw and ProRes Raw, while the built-in settings include Red Picture Controls profiles. The maximum video recording resolution is 6K at 60 fps, while 4K supports frame rates of up to 120 fps.

32-Bit Audio Recording

High-quality video is complemented by an advanced audio recording system. The Nikon ZR is the first mirrorless camera to support 32-bit audio recording through built-in OZO microphones. The model has no electronic viewfinder — a large 4-inch display on a swivel hinge is used for framing. The camera also lacks a bulky battery grip, making it more convenient to mount on stabilizers and gimbals for video shooting.
