Manual focus
— the ability to focus the camera manually, usually using a ring on the lens. Note that in this case, only focus is implied when photographing; this function may not be available during video recording, so the manual focus of the video is highlighted separately in the selection.Manual focus is noticeably more difficult than automatic focus, it requires certain skills, precise movements, and often takes more time. On the other hand, in this mode, the photographer can completely control the sharpness and does not depend on autofocus. This is especially useful when creating shots with non-standard focus that automatics could not provide; and in general, the manual mode significantly expands the range of techniques available to the photographer.
In cameras with non-replaceable lenses (compacts and ultrazooms, see “Camera Type”), the presence of a manual mode is a sign of an advanced model designed for experienced users and professionals. If the optics are interchangeable, it is considered that the camera, by definition, supports manual focus, although in fact this depends on the lens installed (some lenses do not have manual focus).
