The most popular format for using such an interface is to connect headphones; however, it can also be used for other audio devices, most notably computer speakers. Anyway, the 3.5 mm output on the monitor is convenient because it is located in close proximity to the user, and connecting / disconnecting headphones or speakers to this connector is much more convenient than constantly reaching for the system unit.
