In the storyline, the action of Death Stranding takes place in the near future after a global cataclysm that has fractured human society into isolated cities, separated by deadly wastelands. One of the threats to face is the "time rain" called Timefall, which accelerates the passage of time for everything it touches. The player takes on the role of a courier who transports important items between separate cities and strives to reconnect isolated communities into a whole.The game is a unique mix of genres: action with a third/first-person view in an open world with multiplayer elements and a number of original solutions. In particular, the character's death sends the player not to the last save point, but to a "purgatory"; during the time spent there, the main game world continues to evolve based on the actions previously taken by the player. Additionally, the player's abilities include moving and interacting with the surrounding world beyond the game character's body. The mentioned multiplayer elements, besides the traditional cooperative mode, include the ability to send each other various items without directly crossing paths in the game world. The game became the first project of game designer Hideo Kojima after leaving Konami; speaking about its genre, he claims that there is no definitive name for the genre of Death Stranding—similar to how the Metal Gear series games were simply called "action" at the time of release and only later received the "stealth" label.
