The first mirrorless camera with a global shutter

The Sony A9 III is the first model in the top mirrorless camera segment to feature a global shutter. What is it and what advantages does it provide? Let's find out.

Advantages of global shutter

The main advantage of the global shutter is that it allows data to be read from all pixels of the sensor simultaneously, which solves many problems. Firstly, the camera can shoot continuously at an impressive speed of up to 120 frames per second in full RAW format using autofocus. Secondly, the mirrorless camera can shoot at ultra-short shutter speeds of up to 1/80,000 of a second. The third advantage is the ability to synchronize with flashes at any speed. And finally, the global shutter completely eliminates the rolling shutter effect.

Stabilization system and autofocus

The camera is equipped with an 8-step matrix stabilization system on 5 axes. As for the autofocus, it has 759 focus points, covering almost 96% of the frame. The autofocus uses intelligent algorithms to track people, animals, birds, insects and vehicles in the frame. Also, the autofocus system has a new Pre-Capture function, which is activated by half-pressing the shutter button.

Professional video capabilities

The global shutter sensor is the perfect choice for video shooting. The Sony A9 III is capable of recording 4K video without cropping, with 10-bit color reproduction and 4:2:2 subsampling. The operator has access to S-Log3 and the company's S-Cinetone color profile. In addition, the camera is equipped with an OLED viewfinder with a resolution of 9.44 million dots, a touchscreen on a swivel joint, dual slots for SD UHS-II and CFExpress type A cards, and protection from dust and moisture. The result is a camera that can significantly change the approach to photography.
