— a series of shooters/survival horror games created by Ukrainian developer 4A Games, based on the post-apocalyptic novel series of the same name by Russian author Dmitry Glukhovsky. The action initially takes place in the Moscow Metro, which has become a refuge for the remnants of the city's population after a global nuclear war. Survivors are forced to contend not only with radiation and pollution but also with monsters spawned by the nuclear winter. Players take on the role of one of the metro's inhabitants, Artyom, the protagonist of the first book in the series, "Metro 2033." The first part of the game bears the same name and generally follows the book's plot; subsequent games are not based on the novels and follow a separate storyline, with Glukhovsky himself directly involved in its creation. The plot is predominantly linear, but by the third part, open locations with the possibility of free exploration appear. The second and third parts feature "good" and "bad" ending options, depending on the player's actions. The original series includes three games — Metro 2033 (2010), Metro: Last Light (2013), and Metro: Exodus (2019). The first game was released for major PC operating systems (Windows, Linux, macOS) as well as for Xbox, while the others were released for Windows, PS, and Xbox. In 2014, the first two parts were released as the remastered Metro Redux, featuring reworked graphics and improved enemy intelligence, as well as (for Metro 2033) new difficulty modes. This edition is the most extensive in terms of available platforms, including the three mentioned PC OSs, as well as PS4 and Xbox One consoles.
Overall, Metro is one of the most successful franchises in the shooter/survival horror genre and the most successful (as of 2019) among similar games from developers in the CIS. All games have received high ratings, especially for their original setting with a rich atmosphere (although some reviewers still found it "not scary enough").
