— the essence of this inseparable pair of game genres is hidden directly in the name: "hack and slash", "beat them up". The basis of the gameplay of such games is close combat with numerous opponents. But if Beat'em up is mass fights in linear levels (Battletoads, Fighting Force), then Hack and Slash requires pumping up the character, and the emphasis in the subgenre is on the speed of attacks and the use of powerful combos (Diablo series, Hades, etc.).
