— a series of games from Nintendo, part of the well-known media franchise of the same name. However, the franchise itself began with just two video games for the Game Boy platform. Nowadays, the series includes about two dozen main games, as well as numerous spin-offs.The main games of the series are made in the Japanese RPG genre. Pokemon, from which the name is taken, are special creatures with certain specific abilities; catching, training and organizing battles between these creatures are handled by Pokemon trainers, one of which is the main character of the series. This character travels around the game world, trying to collect all the Pokémon available; this is a rather difficult task, since even in the first game their number reached 151, and in the following parts it increased more and more.
An interesting feature of the main titles is that they are released in pairs, and each edition has types of Pokémon that are not in the other edition. Thus, an indispensable element of the gameplay is the exchange of Pokemon between players. This feature has been available since the very first games — with a direct connection of consoles; in modern titles, the exchange is carried out mainly over the Internet.
As of 2019, there are 8 generations of games released in the series; current desktop console editions are exclusively available on the Nintendo Switch.
