Sonic

— the Sonic the Hedgehog series is about the adventures of Sonic, an anthropomorphic hedgehog who is also the mascot of Sega, the company that publishes these games. The main games in the series are platformers (see "Genres - Adventure") with a completely linear storyline, where Sonic and his friends must save the world from various enemies, primarily the evil genius Dr. Eggman (Robotnik). Among the spin-offs, there are games in other genres such as racing, fighting, and more.

The main character, Sonic, got his name for his ability to move at supersonic speeds; a quick dash with a spin into a ball is one of his "signature" attacks. Sonic is one of the most popular and recognizable video game characters, having repeatedly topped various related rankings. In some spin-offs, players take control of other characters, including Sonic's "dark version," an anti-hero named Shadow.

Most of the main games in the series have received high praise for both their atmosphere and dynamic gameplay, whose "trademark" is high speed. The franchise has become so successful that it remains a primary source of revenue for Sega and ranks among the top ten best-selling game series in history.
