After 2008, the release of new games was paused, but in 2018, the series was "revived" with the release of Spyro Reignited Trilogy for PS4 and Xbox One (a year later, versions for PC and Nintendo Switch were introduced). This release, developed by Toys For Bob and published by Activision, is a collection of remasters of the first three games in the series, originally intended for PlayStation — Spyro the Dragon, Ripto's Rage, and Year of the Dragon; the changes mainly affected the graphics, while the level maps (including the placement of items and enemies) remained the same).The games in the series are primarily aimed at a young audience and are characterized by their distinctive bright design. The action takes place in a fantasy world consisting of several "hubs" — key locations; each such location provides access to separate game levels. The plots of the games are quite simple and standard, based on fighting evil and searching for certain artifacts. Most of the time, the player controls the titular character — a dragon named Spyro, but in the third game, Year of the Dragon, several more playable characters appear. Spyro has two types of attacks in his arsenal (charge and fire breath), which need to be used correctly in different situations, and his wings allow him to glide to reach places inaccessible with regular jumps. The hero is accompanied by a dragonfly named Sparx, who acts as a health indicator. Other characters have their own sets of skills, and players will need to play as them to complete certain levels.
In its time, the Spyro series games received high ratings from critics and recognition from players; the remaster was also successful — in particular, in the first week after release, it ranked first in sales among games for all platforms in the UK and among PS4 games in Australia.
